Sashiko & Boro Stencil suitable for sashiko stitching, boro stitching, mending and other stitching projects.

Very popular for visible mending on blue jeans, and other upcycle slow fashion and slow stitching projects.

About the Stencil:

The stencil is made of a composite fibre that is strong, washable, bendable, & not easy to tear (I tried, it doesn't tear although it is thin and has a 'paper-y fibre feel).  You can use almost any transfer pen or pencil with these, unlike the thicker acrylic plastic stencils which need a long thin tip to reach the fabric.

Easy to store, space saving, and not breakable.

Choose size:

  •  Larger (5 1/2" across, 3" sides)
  • Smaller (4" across, 2" sides)

About the Sashiko design:

This Sashiko design dates back to the 1600's and would have been found stitched on cuffs, shoulder's, collars, knees and elbows of clothing.  Wherever the cloth became thin and weak with wear, a patch of stronger cloth was layered and sashiko stitched over it to keep the garment usable.

This dense design is a style of Sashiko stitching called Hitome-sashi (one stitch Sashiko).

To stitch the design do the following steps

  • first stitch each horizontal line from edge to the other, straight across
  • next stitch each vertical line  from edge to the other, straight across
  • finally stitch all the diagonal lines  from edge to the other, straight across

The design will emerge from the accumulation of the lines of single stitches.
