This white cotton is PFD (prepared for dye). Use it for immersion dying, painting, block printing, shibore, fabric pens, and more. Combine it with hand or machine stitching techniques or use in quilts.
PFD means prepared for dye, which means you should not need to scour it, all the 'gunk' has been removed. That being said, it feels like it could still be starched to me so I would definitely pre-wash it for dying.
If you are planing to paint on it, it is a firm smooth tight surface just as it is.
