This kit contains only the basic things you need to mend your woven cotton fabrics in the visible mending style.

Here is what I chose for the kit and why:

  • There is 65 grams of 4"X 4" pieces of woven cotton fabrics in assorted colours so you can find a suitable colour match for the fabric you are mending. This cloth is suitable for mending shirts, skirts, cotton pants, kitchen linens. I have used it to mend jeans and it stands up pretty well on knees when heavily stitched.
  • 20 meters of a neutral taupe sashiko thread which will show your stitching, but in a 'quiet' tone (a good way to start),
  • and a pack of Olympus sashiko needles which are big eye  long needles. This is best for using with the sashiko thread and for making running stitches. Running stitches and overcast stitches are, I think, the most commonly used and effective mending stitches for beginners, so begin with those.
  • You may also want a thimble and pins.

These fabrics are colourfast, machine wash and dry, with no noticeable shrink. You don't need to pre-wash. Each pack may contain some different but similar colours. The fabrics are the same.

Notes: I have not included any instructions.  You can find books on mending on this website. My favourite is The Mending Directory by Erin Eggenburg.
